There are definitely a lot of ways of figuring out how your quirky character should say things, or crack a joke, but how do can you make sure that your quirky character stays in quirky-character?
So today, I’m going to be giving you guys 5 tips on keeping your quirky character quirky!
1. Babyish Words
I’m a writer and I’m telling you to use baby words. *shakes head sadly* Sorry guys, I’m doomed.
OKAY, BUT! This is actually a really good way to bring out the quirkiness in a character.
*crickets chirp*
…Uuuhhh Mary? Why?
Because the casualness and laziness of using those words contribute to a quirky person’s energetic but smooth personality. It makes them feel a bit more…loose.
Like how before, I talked about Keefe and his looseness, well, he also uses these kind of words:
- Gunna
- Shoulda
- Coulda
- Wanna
- Anywho
- ETC!!!! (
that’s not part of the list, by the way)
2. Babyish Stuff
Wow Mary telling us to do STUFF! HOW INGENIOUS OF YOU
Funny characters are completely ridiculous and immature. I should know *evil laughs*
Some examples of this would be:
- Swinging their legs
- Giggling
- Oo-ing and aah-ing (
HOW DO YOU SPELL THAT???)
3. Oblivious
“Awesome!” He cried. “I have no idea what you just said but AWESOME!”
4. A Majority of the Time, He’ll Be Happy/Positive
This doesn’t count for the snarky, sarcastic characters because they obviously are quite negative.
But normal quirky characters are usually very excited about everything.
Example: “Ohhh look! There’s a volcano that’s gunna erupt and now we’re all gunna die! Wow! This is going to be SO COOL to watch!”
On the flip-side of that, if they’re always so happy it makes it even more deep when they’re depressed or sad:
5. Run-On Sentences
There are two ways to go about this:
- Just make them ramble on and on giddily.
- Make them ramble on and on and then suddenly, out of the blue, shout out something completely unrelated to the subject.
