Plot vs Character vs Theme: Which One is the Best?

Okay guys, it’s DEBATE DAY!

(It’s actually not, but I’m starting a debate *evil laughs*) The topic of the debate? Out of plot, character, and theme…which one is the BEST?

Let’s get started!Screen Shot 2019-02-10 at 2.39.03 PM

1. What is Plot?

Plot is what happens in a story. In fact, is the story. Plot is the stage for your character and theme to perform on.

2. What is Character?

‘Character’ is exactly what is sounds like-the characters in the story! The people who are experiencing the whole adventure. The character’s are the ones who have the inner journeys, and who the story is all about.

3. What is Theme?

The ‘Theme’ is the lesson about life that the character must learn. The character is living his life believing in Lies, and the Truth/the Theme is what’s going to pull him out of it, shake him up, and tell him what’s really going on.

Now! Onto the opinionated part of this post!

Which One is the Best?

Drum-roll, please!

Answer: Character

Okay, yes, this is solely opinionated-but let’s lay the facts down.

The Character is the person you go on the whole journey with. Their inner journey is literally what the Plot is built around, and the Theme comes from the Character’s inner journey.

I think it’s safe to say that ‘Character’ is the winner!

Thank you, thank you. *bows*

giphy.gifScreen Shot 2019-02-10 at 2.39.03 PMAlthough Character-in my opinion-is the winner, that doesn’t discard Plot or Theme from the subject in the slightest! Without Plot there would be no story for the character to come alive in, and without Theme, the whole story would be meaningless.

What do you think? Out of Plot, Character, and Theme, which do you think is the ‘best’?

  1. I think it definitely depends on your goal. Some genres can be considered more character driven than plot driven and vice versa. For me, they go hand in hand. If your plot is weak but your characters are well developed, the overall feeling of the book is still affected negatively in my opinion. You can’t have one without the other.

    1. Ooh yes, definitely! I totally agree that plot and character must go together-one without the other makes for a very weak story.
      Thanks for your thoughts, Jen!
